Sol was born on a fringe world. He doesn’t remember the name. He does remember it was dusty, dirty, smelly, and dangerous. His mother, Agnes James took Sol away from his dirty home on that fringe world and stowed away in an Alliance frigate. She only wanted him to get away from his poor home and his drunken father. The Alliance however didn’t take so nicely to his mother’s criminal activity and arrested them both. Solomon was raised for most of his life in an Alliance Juvenile Teaching Facility, which was basically an orphanage type prison.
This was when Sol first showed his affinity for being a fixer of things. He took apart all of the sophisticated equipment in his room and put it back together. (With some minor modifications) He wasn’t formally taught the details of mechanics and the physics of space travel. He didn’t need it. By the time he’d reached the age of 20 he’d become more skilled than any of the professors at the teaching facility. He was removed from the facility and offered a place provided by the state, of course the state couldn’t provide a job, money, or any way of making sure he had food so it didn’t quite work out.
Sol found himself doing odd jobs for several years flying back and forth across the ‘Verse seeing the sights and doing what it took to survive. He worked up a pretty big rep as a good mechanic. He spent a good long time trying to track down his deadbeat dad that ruined his childhood. Not all sob stories have happy endings. He didn’t find his dad, he probably never will.
The war broke out and Sol found himself working for some Browncoats doing some fixin’ for a while and then later working with a particular Alliance Colonel. That didn’t end too well and he was once again unemployed.
He was evading capture by some Alliance security officers to be taken in to custody to answer some questions regarding a particular deal that may or may not have been somewhat extralegal. During his fleeing he ran into some of the crew of said former Alliance Colonel. Now Captain Maverick. He was offerred a ship to work on and decent pay to boot so he accepted.
Since that point he's been shot at trying to break into and out of a penal moon. He's been shot at by invading pirates (which caused nearly half his ship to be blown out into the black by the way). He's been shot at by a group called the White Lotus. And while getting shot at all the time ain't exactly the safest living ever, there ain't no real reason to stay safe all the time. It'd be too boring.
He’s been in plenty of fights and fixed plenty of things. He doesn’t have a family to speak of. No goals either. He’s not overly greedy. He just wants to keep fixing things and keep doing what it takes to survive.
